It’s so easy for any reasonable man to do so many
unreasonable things, oh yes it is.
Cuz I was once headed to where you are, and now I’m
Wishing on a different star than the one I was before

And so far I haven’t broken much
that mattered to the both of us, except for just that one time
So how about this: I’ll give you one more wish
For you to control me with, if you want it like I want it to

And I was talkin like I believed in the things of love.

It’s a long road from Miami to Chicago
Well I only drove it home, I took a plane there
And the Cracker Barrel map, telling me where I’m at
And I missed you like I miss you now

And I was talkin like I believed in the things of love.

On September 10th, 2001 I was in Florida looking at colleges and schools with my mother. More precisely, I was checking out Full Sail in Winter Park. My sister was in Kenya. My father was in Chicago. The next morning we got into our rented car and began to drive to the airport. When we turned on the radio, our plans changed. The next day we drove up the approximately 1243 miles back home using a map from a Cracker Barrel restaurant. When I saw "we" I really mean that my mother drove. The whole way. 24 hours. With only a two hour break to sleep a bit. It was a strange situation. People were not how we were used to them being. We would stop to get gas and end up talking about life and death with the woman working the register in Georgia. Sometimes I think the situation was absurd. But it was far too imminent to be absurd - if was too much like life to be unlike it. People call things absurd when they don't line up with our created orders and systems, when in fact the absurdity lies in trying to impose systems onto life. All that explanation for three lines of lyrics. In the middle of all this chaos, the only care you have is for your friends and family. And this song is about something related to that... I guess.
